Full Description

This powerpoint presentation provides the following overview of the project: many of the solutions and problems in environmentalmanagement have developed from black boxmodels;new technologies have enabled us to investigatethe fundamentals of these processes;a number of recent findings illustrate the potentialof this approach;this requires us to re-think our processes and re-evaluateour solutions; and, there are implications for a wide range ofindustries including water. Implications for the water industry include:new insights are producing newtechnologies for water, these are inpart being driven by the needs of theindustry, such as:lower operating costs;lower capital costs;increased regulation;new technology adoption; incremental changes are getting harder toachieve;many technologies are mature, evenmembranes!;linear thinking is not an option; and, the next phase of technologies will comefrom outside the traditional water industry. Topics covered include: impact of bacteria; biofilm properties; biofilm development, the microcolonymodel; biofilm management and dispersal; novel biofilm control strategy; quorum sensing blockers; granules, specializedbiofilms; applications of biotechnology; nanotechnology; pathogens -new insights, rapid detection andnew control measures; and, making nano materials intomacroprocesses. Includes figures.
