This powerpoint presentation begins by providing background information on waterborne pathogens and goes on to outline topics that include: sources of contamination;index and indicator organisms;defining and interpreting;local, national and internationalrecommendations and standards; and,personal suggestions. Conclusions were that: currently, Escherichia coli is the most reliablemicrobiological indicator of faecal pollution;no single water quality indicator can meet thediversity of needs for all water sources; "An ounce (gram) of prevention is better than apound (kilo) of cure"; and,source water protection is an essentialintervention strategy in a multi-barrier approach.
