Full Description
This paper describes an explosion of a 16,000-gallon liquid alum storage tank that devastated a room, blew away a brick wall between the fill room and the chemical storage room, moved a 33-cubic-foot concrete base several feet, left chemical piping and electric terminal boxes hanging in space or lying in heaps on the floor. The cause of the incident was found to be a failure of the fiberglass-reinforced plastic material at the joint where the inspection port, or manway, was attached to the tank's sidewall.
