This paper describes the Cryptosporidium outbreak in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, municipal water supply in 1993 with special emphasis on the legal aftermath of the outbreak. Several steps, which can protect both the consumers and the municipal water department budget, are discussed: liability insurance; pre-crisis planning; and, crisis response.
